So, I’m writing this to complain about the stupidity developing within the comments of this deviation: http://fav.me/d5n4rq8
Here, Exileden (or Pearl Eden, as she was formerly known), a very talented and well known artist on deviantART, decided to paint a werewolf piece, as a sort of tribute to her favorite artists (all very well known werewolf/anthro artists), as they are her inspiration. She drew this for fun, and out of her own imagination, created a werewolf piece that was all her own.

Now, you’re an artist, wondering around dA. You come across this piece. One glance, 1 of 3 things will happen, depending on the type of person you are:
1. Your first thoughts are wow, what a beautiful painting (cuz lets face it, the details are FANTASTIC and the level of skill clearly shows. You praise it, fav it, of course!
2. Your first thoughts are, “Gee, that looks a lot like Goldenwolf’s piece” but shrug it off, maybe state it once just to share your thought, but you like it anyway, and you of course compliment it/fav it, etc.
3. Your first thoughts again are, “looks a lot like Goldenwolf’s piece” but instead, you whine and ‘threaten’ them with the whole, “you better give credit where its due” or “don’t sell it” or “it isn’t cool to blatantly rip someone else’s style” and you whine in the comments or heck, maybe still even fav it…
So…. I want to personally crush the last one, but I’d even settle for slapping the 2nd. Me? My first thoughts were #1, and I don’t think I even had Goldenwolf going through my head when I saw it. But, I know others, maybe the ones with your heads on straights, will have that image comparison dug very deeply waaaaaay back there if you are choosing #1. Even I can let that slide.
I love Goldenwolf, she’s one of my favorite artists. She was my idol when it came to anthro/werewolf artwork, and yes, you can see my inspirations from her seeping subtly in my earlier works (before I learned a style all my own). Even I noted her back in the day (as I’m sure many did or do), asking if I could reference her artwork for learning purposes. She was totally cool with it! Referencing is all about learning. Of course, you give credit where its due, and you know what, most of us artists are fine with it. Heck, just asking for permission, dude, we love it. Even if we have to say no to you. At least you care about us.
Now, these people complaining like they are the police of her, I… I don’t even know what to call them. Either they are the extreme police type who can’t get past a little similarities, or they are just outright trolls trying to stir up drama. Whatever they are, they succeeded in creating drama anyway. I read all the comments, and every time I saw someone compare it to Goldenwolf, I just wanted to cringe. Are people that petty? I mean, heck, I get folks noting me saying “oh no, somebody ripped your art sugar” and I go to look, and I see nothing alike. NOTHING. And I’m like, *head desk* It must be those people…
Exileden has done NOTHING WRONG. She doesn’t owe ANYBODY ANYTHING. She can sell this and market it however she dang well pleases. No other artist owns this pose or like-ness. People need to get over whatever it is they have stirring in their art mentality pot. Unless its a direct trace, like, exactly line for line no changes made what-so-ever, adding personality and making it their own is perfectly fine in this world. It isn’t copyrightable or trade-marked.
I’m sure artists like Goldenwolf are sick and tired of being compared and measured up to other aritsts, too. I know I hate it when someone compares me. Can’t they see my art as its own unique entity? Can no artist ever start their own thing without being compared to someone else’s? Probably not, but the least we can do his have the respect of being considered an original artist without having someone telling us what we can or can’t draw.
